On February 25th, 2017, The Academy of Motion Pictures held its 11th annual Oscar’s Week Hair and Makeup Symposium hosted by Kathryn L. Blondell, Lois Burwell, and academy governor Leonard Engelman, honoring the work of some of the most talented artists in the industry.
This year’s nominees for hair and makeup included Eva von Bahr and Love Larson for A Man Called Ove, John Hartlow and Richard Alonzo for Star Trek Beyond, and Alessandro Bertolazzi, Giorgio Gregorini and Christopher Nelson for Suicide Squad.

Hollywood Makeup Magazine’s Creative Director Agne Skaringa and Managing Editor/Writer Sara Montano were honored to attend this year’s symposium and humbled to be in the presence of such great talent!

The evening started off with interviews of all the nominees, beginning with A Man called Ove and ending with Suicide Squad. Along the way, we learned some interesting facts about the extensive details that went into creating each single character. For example, we learned that Natalia’s character from Star Trek took an incredible 7 hours to attach just the shell head and another 1-1/2 hours to remove it! Talk about dedication! Harlow commented it was the last day of shooting in Dubai and Natalia barely made into the film, considering the time it took to prepare her for the camera, we can understand why! How did he manage to pull it off? Harlow commented, “calmer minds prevail.” We definitely agree!

We also learned that the actor portraying Croc was actually allergic to latex! We can image how challenging this character must have been for the Suicide Squad crew. While we didn’t learn the secret behind the alternative methods used to adhere the prosthetics, we did learn the prosthetics and makeup application was a 5 hour process and it was applied over 70 times! Incredible!

At the conclusion of the symposium, the audience had the opportunity to ask the nominees questions regarding just about anything. One audience member asked what advice the nominees can share with aspiring makeup artists, they all agreed on one thing: Do what you love!
Congratulations to Suicide Squad for winning this year’s Achievement in Makeup, Oscar’s 2017!
